Jonny Goode's 'This is England' - London Tour Day 3, 12 September 2012
The Grassington Festival was a turning point for Jonny's live music. That event highlighted the need to grab attention and give today's audiences more than just a man and a guitar. Jonny's online busking show provided a relaxed environment for him to experiment with adding to already great melody and lyrics. The loop pedal and various percussion sounds that are currently featured in the show were developed there, and the result is richer, with a strong beat and sparkling high notes that add texture and depth.
In today's age of cheap electronics, it's important to note that his music is still played live without canned samples or sequenced tracks. Each layer is cleverly added to the next as the song is built up, and it's very entertaining stuff!
The equipment used to produce this sound on stage is simple but adds a level of complexity to the venue's setup that can cause problems for the sound engineer. Jonny's kit has three outputs, and the levels on each have to be set just right and any extra stage microphones turned off and managed. It takes a little longer for the sound check and definitely keeps everyone on their toes!
We met some interesting folk at tonight's gig at Lock 17, Camden Lock. A talent scout approached Jonny for a television project on the 24th October. And thanks to Robin the sound engineer for the .WAV file, to Anthony for coming to take some pictures for the NikonGear website, to Breno for his encouragement and good advice, and to Jonny for putting on a good show despite a lot of adversity this week.
Enjoy the snaps, and please remember to click on them to view each in a separate tab.
